Portland Trip, 1999

The following are our daily email updates from our trip to Portland. For some reason we sent out a list of all the places we ate while we were there, along with URLs for the restaurants if we could find them. So, we've included the restaurants here as well. Of course we have no idea if the links still work or not. We also didn't like most of the pictures we took, but we through in a few towards the end.

Day 1- August 5, 1999
Just wanted to drop a line to everyone and say that we made it to Portland safe and sound. Picture of Doubletree hotel Getting here was relatively uneventful, other than not being able to find the hotel at first, and then our room not being ready for us. The hotel staff let us rest up in another room for a couple of hours while waiting on our room. We're staying at the Doubletree Portland, Downtown. We're getting ready to go find a place to eat tonight and will then take a drive around town for a little bit. Hope everyone is doing well...

Supper: Marco's Cafe and Espresso

Day 2- August 6, 1999
We have survived day 2 of our trip, and I (Marc) am starting to figure out how to get from point A to B without going through C-Z to get there. Ruth is feeling all nostalgic, at least about the places and things she remembers. Today we drove by places she used to live Picture of Ringside with a stop at Wilshire Park to play on the swings. We took pictures, so everyone can join in the fun when we return. We ate lunch at a nice little cafe we stumbled across since the place we were heading is no longer there. Tonight we lived it up and ate at Ringside. It was yummy. Tomorrow we will be heading out to Astoria to look at the shipwreck and stuff. It is kinda rainy, but we like it. People here are making a big deal of the thunderstorms, but nothing phases us. More later...

Lunch: Hoyt Street Cafe
Supper: Ringside

Day 3- August 7, 1999
Day 3 found us driving to Astoria. We played on ships and drove up to see the Astoria Column, which Ruth thought was rather ugly. The view was nice though. We have pictures. Tonight we went in search of Thai food and found a nice little place in NW Portland called Beau Thai. More later...

Lunch: Pier 11 in Astoria
Supper: Beau Thai

Day 4- August 8, 1999
We're not sure why we started doing these daily updates, but now that we've started, we just can't stop. Today was spent touring around Portland some more. We went to the Picture of Pizzacato Saturday/Sunday market downtown. It was, um, interesting. We ate lunch at a nice gourmet pizza place called Pizzacato. From there we went to Grant Park to see the Beverly Cleary statues. Next we spent some time at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). A quick drive by Mill Ends Park (to small to really stop at) ended the tour of the day. Tomorrow will consist of a drive out to Tillamook, up the coast to Canon Beach, and back to Portland. Hope all is well...

Lunch: Pizzacato
Supper: Portland Steak & Chophouse

Day 5- August 9, 1999
Greetings from the land of Bait and Espresso...

Today we went on a grand adventure to the coast. We started off fairly earlier and ventured west. Our first stop was the Tillamook Cheese Factory in, surprise, Tillamook. We saw more cheese and dairy products in one place than every before. We fought off temptation and left with only a pound of fudge and a mail order catalogue for the cheeses. From there we headed north, winding along the coast on Hwy 101 to Canon Beach. A quick bite at Mo's and we were off to the beach. Ruth put on sweats, but I roughed it in shorts and a t-shirt. It was a little cool (or down right cold if you ask Ruth). We hiked along the beach, played in the sand and waves, and took pictures. Next we drove through Canon Beach and stopped by the Kite Factory. No real reason other than the fact it was there. After that, a short drive back to Portland to get cleaned up and find something to eat.

So far there are two things we've learned to count on in this part of Oregon. First, the right lane will always end. It doesn't matter where you are or where you are going, the right lane always ends. The second fact is that espresso is necessary for life in this area. After all, why else would you find a bait shop in the middle of nowhere that sells espresso. In fact, just about the time the right lane ends, there will be a place selling espresso.

Lunch: Mo's in Canon Beach
Supper: McCormick & Schmick

Day 6- August 10, 1999
The day started early with a trip to Multnomah Falls. We walked up the falls and had brunch at the lodge there. After returning to Portland we went on an adventure to find a variety of different little places all over town, including Powell's Technical Bookstore, Made in Oregon, the Multnomah Library, and 2 or 3 other places. Tonight we ventured into an as of yet unexplored section of Portland to a restaurant called Three Doors Down. We have been back at the hotel for a while now resting up from the day. Tomorrow is our last full day here, so we are trying to figure out everything that we still want to do. There's a chance we will not email again until we return to Austin depending on how tired we are tomorrow.

Brunch: Multnomah Falls Lodge
Supper: Three Doors Down Cafe

Day 7- August 11, 1999
Today was spent exploring the city. We started by searching for A Children's Place, but unfortunately it has switched owners and moved to a new location. However, we did find a nice little place to eat lunch and stumbled across Laurelhurst Park to feed the ducks. We stopped by the Portland Art Museum and the Oregon Historical Society, but admission was a little steep. Later we explored a couple of colleges in the area (Reed and Lewis & Clark). Reed was so-so, but we really like Lewis & Clark, especially the library. We also went window shopping in the area of NW 23rd. Tonight we ate at Jake's Grill in the Governor Hotel.

We noticed that the apartments across the street from the Doubletree have weekly rates on furnished apartments. We've been debating on spending another week... we'll let you know what we decide tomorrow...

Lunch: Rustica
Supper: Jake's Grill

Day 8- August 12, 1999
We didn't actually make an entry this day since we left Portland. It was a typical flight back, with the exception of multiple people being booked for the same seats. Luckily, there was plenty of extra room so all worked out okay.

Breakfast: Cityside Grill (next to Doubletree)
